Introduction

The Design Manager Menu Bar has three Style selections plus the Help selection.  As the Menu Bar selections are made, the results are displayed in the Pattern Style Setting section just below the Menu Bar.

The Menu Bar Style selections are:

    1. Patterns
    2. Finished Size
    3. Beads
    4. Help.

The Body of the Design Manager Windows, shown on the right, is divided into four sections:

    1. Pattern Style Settings
    2. Pattern Size/Resize Settings
    3. Preferences
    4. Control Panel.

Pattern Style Settings

The Design Manager, Menu Bar, Patterns Pull down has five pattern style selections as shown in the figure on the right.  To select a pattern style, click on "Patterns" on the Design Manager Menu Bar and the Patterns Pull down will appear.  Move the mouse pointer to the desired pattern style and click the left mouse button to select it.  The name of the selected pattern style will appear in the "Pattern" box in the Style Section

The pattern style selected will be used to draw or re-draw the Sketch Pad Pattern Grid.  The colors, if any, in an existing pattern grid will be used if a pattern is re-drawn.

Finished Size

The Design Manager, Menu Bar, Finished Size Pull down has three design size selections as shown in the figure on the right.  To select size measure to work in, click on "Finished Size" on the Design Manager Menu Bar and the Finished Size Pull down will appear.  Move the mouse pointer to the desired size measure and click the left mouse button to select it.  The name of the selected size measure will appear in the "Size In" box in the Style Section.

The calculations in the Pattern Size and Resize section, used to draw the Sketch Pad Pattern Grid, will be based on the select measurement.

Beads

The Design Manager, Menu Bar, Beads Pull down has six selections as shown in the figure on the right.  To select a bead size to work in, click on "Beads" on the Design Manager Menu Bar and the Bead Size Pull down will appear.

The Bead Size Pull down has two Bead Types, "Delica" and "Seed."  To select the Delica Bead, move the mouse pointer to the word Delica and Click on it.  To select a seed bead, move the mouse pointer to the phrase Seed - Rochaille and the Seed Bead Size pull down will appear.  Move mouse pointer to the desired seed bead size click the left mouse button to select it.  The "C" next to the size means the size is for Czech beads, the "J" next to the size means the size is for Japanese beads.  There is a slight difference which the program adjusts for.  The name of the selected size measure will appear in the "Size In" box in the Style Section.

The bead selected will be used to draw or re-draw the Sketch Pad Pattern Grid.  The colors, if any, in an existing pattern grid will be used if a pattern is re-drawn.

Size/Resize Settings

The Pattern Size/Resize Settings Panel, shown on the right, is a user interface for entering information about the pattern.

At the top of the panel are the Pattern Length and Width input fields.  To the right of each field are "Up/Down Spin Buttons."  To enter information by typing into an entry field, click on the field, and enter the new setting.  Alternately, the "Up/Down Spin Buttons" may be used to adjust size.  To increase the size, click on the upward pointing arrow.  To decrease the size, click on the downward pointing arrow.  The "Up/Down Spin Buttons" increase or decrease the size in accordance with the setting in the "Size In" box in the "Style Settings" Panel.

Below the entry field are five check boxes.  The top four are mutually exclusive in that if Change on Top is selected, Change on Bottom will be de-selected automatically.  Or, if Change on Bottom is selected, Change on Top will be de-selected automatically.  This applies to the Change on Left and Change on Right check boxes as well.

The fifth check box Enables or disables the "Fringe" feature.  Because fringe is free form in finished pieces, the effect of using this is for getting a sense of color and will not represent how the fringe will actually look.

When "Switch to Fringe" is selected, an entry box will appear.  Enter the number of the horizontal row that is to be the first row of fringe.  In Brick, the fringe will be aligned with the base row.  In Peyote the fringe will be aligned with every other vertical row.  In 2-Drop Peyote, the fringe will be aligned with ever other vertical row pair.

At the bottom of the Size/Resize Settings Panel are two slide bars; one for adjusting the scale of the pattern and one for adjusting the bead shape.  Scale may be set to any size between actual size and four times actual size.  Bead shape is adjusted by changing the ratio between the Height and Width of a bead.  If the value is negative, the bead will be wider than it is high.  If the value is positive, the bead will be higher than it is wide.

The settings in the Pattern Size/Resize Panel will be used to draw or re-draw the Sketch Pad Pattern Grid.  The colors, if any, in an existing pattern grid will be used if a pattern is re-drawn.

Preference Settings

The Preference Settings are a set of check boxes that effect the way the pattern appears both in print and on the screen.

The two settings on the right, "Print Bead Count" and "Print Work Sheet" effect the printed output.  If "Print Bead Count" is selected, a table will be printed that shows the color of the bead, its ID and the number of beads of the color.  If "Print Work Sheet" is selected, the printed pattern will have a Color ID character on each bead.

If "Preview Work Sheet" is selected, the Color ID characters will appear on each bead displayed on the monitor.

If "Mark Center Row" is selected, the approximate center row of the pattern will be highlighted by a heavy outline around the beads as follows:

Brick                ----- Only the horizontal row is highlighted
Peyote             ----- Only the Vertical row is highlighted
2-Drop Peyote   ----- Only the horizontal row pair is highlighted
Square & Loom ----- Both the horizontal and vertical rows are highlighted.

If "Instant Help" is selected, a pop-up windows will appear if the operator makes an entry error.  If an Instant Help pop-up window appears, the user must acknowledge it, by clicking on the OK button, to continue.

To protect your work from System Crashes, Power Outages, etc., the Program has an automatic backup feature.  To enable the backup feature, set the "nn" value in the

"Auto-Save every nn minutes."

entry box to any value between 1 and 99.  To disable the AutoSave feature, set the value in the entry box to zero.

If the program is terminated normally, the backup file will be erased.  However, if the program is terminated abnormally, the next time the Program is opened, You will be alerted that a backup file exists.  By opening the backup file, the program will restore the pattern design as it was when the backup file was last saved.

The Color ID characters, used to identify the colors used in each bead, can be any font that is installed on your computer.  The default font is MS Sans Sarif, Size 8.  This font was selected because it fits nicely on beads when the scale is set to 3.0 or higher.  To select a font of your choice, Click on the Font Button immediately below the Auto-Save time.  The dialog box, shown on the right, will appear. Use the selections in the dialog box to select the desired font and set its characteristics.  When finished, select OK to change the font to the selected settings. If Cancel is selected, the font will not be changed.

The Preferences selected will be used to draw, re-draw or print the Sketch Pad Pattern Grid.  The colors, if any, in an existing pattern grid will be used if a pattern is re-drawn.

Control Panel

The Control Panel has three buttons; Cancel, New and Update.  If Cancel is selected, any setting changes that had been made will be canceled and the previous settings restored.  If New is selected, the settings new will be used to draw a blank grid on the Sketch Pad.  If Update is selected, any setting changes made will be used to update the pattern that is currently on the Sketch Pad.
